International Women's Day – 8 March – is an occasion to discuss whether men and women in Serbia are equal – and to what extent. According to data, men are more likely to hold leadership positions and earn more.

Data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS) shows that men are predominantly in leadership positions, as well as in professions traditionally seen as “male,” including the army.

The Statistical Office’s publication entitled “Women and Men in Serbia” also reveals that men are the more dominant group at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

In October 2021, the Government of Serbia adopted the Gender Equality Strategy for the period from 2021 to 2030. Issues mentioned in this document include the unequal position of women and men in the labor market and the pay gap between them.

A third of the women who were killed by a family member had previously reported domestic violence, according to the data provided over the last two and a half years during which the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence has been in force. Victims of violence are encouraged to report the perpetrators, but the state has neither a clear plan nor a developed support system that would protect them from violence in the long term and enable them to live a normal life, CINS’ interlocutors say.

When in prison, convicts for domestic violence are granted downtown outings and weekends out. In the last two years, a number of them were released on probation; one of them is Milan Lovrić who killed his wife several months after leaving the prison. Lovrić had previously used his time out of the penitentiary to intimidate his wife.
