Center for Investigative Journalism of Serbia is among the candidates in the category of investigative reporting, for a series of articles on corruption and organized crime

European Press Prize announced the list of candidates for its annual awards in the categories of investigative reporting, commentary, distinguished writing and innovation.

Center for Investigative Journalism of Serbia
(CINS) was nominated for a series of stories on corruption and organized crime. CINS team worked on these stories for eight months and submitted more than 200 FOIA requests, in order to collect relevant data and information on processing corruption in Serbian judiciary. This was the first investigation of this type in Serbia. You can read the stories HERE and HERE.

Fight against corruption and organized crime, although highlighted as a priority by every government in the last ten or so years, boils down in practice to media announcements and arrests on camera. These are followed through with a flurry of criminal charges, but indictments are then in short supply and guilty verdicts are few and far between. Even when a verdict is handed down, suspended sentences seem to be the order of the day.

The preparatory committee noted that CINS stories are: “A testimony to the work of really good, really digging reporters serving their community.”

Besides CINS, in the investigative reporting category nominees are: Anabolics mafiaPanama Papers – The Secrets of Dirty MoneyDark money: London’s Dirty SecretBabies for SaleMapping the Weapons of TerrorMisuse of EU funds: Messerschmidt’s foundations investigated for fraud.

You can see all other nominees HERE.

Winners will be announced at the ceremony in Amsterdam, on April 20.
