Awards for the best investigative stories of the past year were presented at a ceremony held on 7 October in Belgrade. The Center for Investigative Journalism of Serbia (CINS) won second prize for its investigative podcast <\/span>Traces<\/span><\/i>, season <\/span>The Pit<\/span><\/i>, authored by Stefan Markovi\u0107 and Jovana Nikoli\u0107 (n\u00e9e Tomi\u0107).<\/span><\/p>

In the <\/span>The Pit<\/span><\/i><\/a> season, CINS journalists revealed the circumstances surrounding the 2022 Soko mine accident. We sought to determine whether the tragedy was a result of \u201cforce majeure,\u201d as claimed by the prosecution, or whether there actually were accountable parties responsible for the deaths of the eight miners.<\/span><\/p>

Jury member Snje\u017eana Milivojevi\u0107 explained the reasoning behind the award:<\/span><\/p>

\u201cVery complex work, meticulously researched tragedy and its causes with respect for individuals and communities affected by it. Subtle and very compelling presentation of sensitive topics makes a step-by-step introspection into a mining tragedy a vivid and captivating journalistic piece.\u00a0 Successful combination of new format (podcast) and investigative journalism results in an audio piece featuring a variety of journalistic skills. Podcast format greatly contributes to the overall quality and innovates domestic investigative journalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u201cTraces\u201d is Serbia\u2019s first investigative podcast and is available on <\/span>Spotify<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Apple<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Deezer<\/span><\/a>, YouTube (<\/span>episode on the Ribnikar tragedy<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>episode on the miners\u2019 deaths<\/span><\/a>), as well as on CINS\u2019s <\/span>website<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

The jury \u2013 composed of Aleksandra Nik\u0161i\u0107, editor at BBC News Serbian, Milka Tadi\u0107 Mijovi\u0107, president of the Centre for Investigative Journalism in Montenegro (CIN), and Snje\u017eana Milivojevi\u0107, retired professor from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade \u2013 shortlisted 19 out of 34 stories and podcasts for the award.<\/span><\/p>

A total of five stories and one podcast series received awards: two third prizes, two second prizes, and two first prizes.<\/span><\/p>

Third place went to two KRIK stories:\u00a0<\/span>Police report: Neboj\u0161a Stefanovi\u0107 and Marko Parezanovi\u0107 Helped the \u0160ari\u0107 Clan<\/span><\/i><\/a> by\u00a0Stevan Doj\u010dinovi\u0107, Bojana Jovanovi\u0107 and Sofija Paroj\u010di\u0107; and <\/span>Te\u0161i\u0107 Uses \u201cPawns\u201d from the SNS to Evade Sanctions and Earn Millions of Euros<\/span><\/i><\/a> by\u00a0Stevan Doj\u010dinovi\u0107 and Dragana Pe\u0107o.<\/span><\/p>

Second place was shared by CINS\u2019s podcast and BIRN\u2019s story:\u00a0<\/span>Investigative Podcast \u201cTraces\u201d \u2013 season \u201cThe Pit\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0by Jovana Nikoli\u0107 (n\u00e9e Tomi\u0107) and Stefan Markovi\u0107 (CINS); and <\/span>Domestic Violence Against Children: The Invisible Victims<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>by Dragana Prica Kova\u010devi\u0107, Teodora \u0106ur\u010di\u0107 and Gordana Andri\u0107 (BIRN).<\/span><\/p>

First place was awarded to two BIRN stories:\u00a0<\/span>Proven: BIA Hacks Activists\u2019 Phones<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0by Aleksa Te\u0161i\u0107; and the\u00a0<\/span>series of articles on arms exports to Israel<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0by Sa\u0161a Dragojlo.<\/span><\/p>

According to the organizers, the EU Investigative Journalism Awards are also presented in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo, and Turkey, with the aim of drawing attention to and promoting the exceptional achievements of investigative journalists, as well as increasing the visibility of high-quality investigative journalism in these countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
